Two Fire Deaths in Oxford Apartment Building

Cause remains under investigation

Contact: John S. Robison, State Fire Marshal

An apartment house fire Thursday November 21st, claimed the lives of two people and injured two others.

Virginia Winner age 24 and Wesley Winner age 3 were killed in the fire at 20 Echo Street in Oxford.  William Joseph Winner and Julian Winner age 18 months were injured in the 1:15 PM fire.

At the present time the cause of the fire remains under investigation, however, speculation by non-investigators that the fire was caused by one of two electric space heaters has been proven incorrect.

No smoke detectors were found in any of the three apartments in the building.  The fire is being investigated by the Oxford Fire and Police Departments and the Alabama State Fire Marshals Office.
