Escambia County Resident Dies in Fire

No Smoke Detector Present in Home

One person was killed this morning when fire destroyed their one story wood frame home at 670 Teddy Street, Brewton.  Margaret JoAnne Williams, age 58, was killed in the fire which was reported at 7:40 AM.  The Boykin/Damascus Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call.

Investigators with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama State Fire Marshals Office believe the fire occurred when one eye of an electric stove was left on and unattended.  No smoke detectors were in the home when the fire occurred.

An autopsy, by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, is scheduled to identify the specific cause of death.
