Fire at Valley High School

An early morning fire at Valley High School; 501 U. S. Highway 29; Valley, AL resulted in heavy damage to one wing of the school and the closing of the entire Chambers County School System for the remainder of the week.

A passing motorist reported the fire to the Valley Police Department at 5:42 AM Eastern Time. Upon arrival, fire firefighters found the fire had already broken through the roof. Several area fire departments responded to the fire or provided assistance by standing by to answer other calls in the East Alabama Fire District.

Investigators from the East Alabama Fire District, Valley Police Department and the State Fire Marshals Office identified the cause of the fire as electrical. The fire originated at a primary electrical panel next to a closet, then spread to the attic of the building. The fire destroyed three classrooms, a computer lab, one office and the contents of the wing.
