Fifty-three-year-old Billy Hackman of 2401 Euclid Avenue in Jasper died Sunday morning during a fire at his residence. The fire was discovered by a neighbor around 1:48 AM.

At the time of the fire there was no electricity to the mobile home. The victim was using kerosene for a lamp and heater.

The fire originated in the victim’s bedroom where a kerosene heater was located. At the present time the fire appears to have resulted from combustibles being too close to the heater. It is unknown if there were any smoke alarms in the rental home at the time of the fire.

The investigation into the fire and death by the Jasper Police and Fire Departments and the State Fire Marshals Office continues pending results of an autopsy by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
