Former Commissioner Bookout Passes Away

  Judge John G. Bookout, who served as State Insurance Commissioner from 1971-75, passed away Friday, July 18. Judge Bookout had recently returned his native Alabama after residing in Nebraska for 20 years.
   Judge Bookout, who was appointed Commissioner by the late Gov. George C. Wallace, served for four years prior to his election to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.  Upon leaving the court, Judge Bookout served as vice president and general counsel of the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society. He took over as president and chief executive officer of the Omaha, Neb.-based organization in 1985. He continued to serve as chairman of the board until his death.
   Judge Bookout is survived by his wife, Martha, and three daughers, as well as his mother and two sisters.  His funeral was to be held Tuesday, July 21 at the First Baptist Church of Montgomery at 1 p.m.
