Alabamians who want to take the state insurance licensure examination will now have a choice among five new sites at which to take the test.

“One of our most important goals for this year was to make the Department more accessible to the public,” Alabama Insurance Commissioner Walter A. Bell said. “This removes a mammoth obstacle for people in three-quarters of the state.

“People who want to take the producers’ examination shouldn’t have to drive to the test site the day before, spend the night, take the test and then have to drive several hours to get home. Test sites ought to be located throughout the state, and that’s what we’ve done.”

The additional testing sites program is part of a partnership between the Alabama Department of Insurance and the University of Alabama, which is administering the Department-approved program. Other partners include Alabama State University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Bishop State Community College and Jefferson State Community College.  The Department is also continuing its partnership with Troy State University, which offers the test Monday through Friday at Bibb Graves Hall on the Troy campus.

The new sites will be in Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Tuscaloosa.

In Montgomery, the test will be offered daily, Monday through Friday, at the Alabama State University Center for Leadership and Policy. The facility is located at 300 South Court Street. The test will be offered there at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

In Birmingham, the test will be offered on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m., and on Thursdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. The test site will be at Jefferson State Community College in the Lurleen B. Wallace Building.

In Huntsville, the test will be offered every other Friday starting this week at 1:30 p.m. The test site is the Administrative Sciences Building at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

In Mobile, the test will be offered each Wednesday and Thursday, starting this week, at the ACT Center at Bishop State Community College at 1:30 p.m.

In Tuscaloosa, the test will be offered generally on Saturdays and Mondays at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The test will not be offered Saturdays when the University of Alabama football team is playing at home.  Please consult the Alabama Department of Insurance web site, www.aldoi.gov, for more information on test days in Tuscaloosa.

Examination candidates must complete an approved 40-hour pre-licensing course before taking the test and must obtain a passing score in order to obtain a license.  For more information regarding licensure, please contact the Department at 334-269-3550 or visit the Department’s web site.
