Two Childersburg residents died following a 1:35 PM fire on Childersburg Fayetteville Highway Thursday afternoon.
Roy Lee Fortenberry age 91 and Irene Fortenberry age 85 were victims of the fire at their home at 5216 Childersburg Fayetteville Highway. Mr. Fortenberry was killed at the time of the fire while Mrs. Fortenberry died at University of Birmingham Hospital this morning.
At the present time the most probable cause for the fire appears to be improperly discarded smoking materials. No smoke alarms were present in the home at the time of the fire.
The fire and cause of deaths are under investigation by local authorities and the State Fire Marshals Office.
